Gameful Composition

How do rule-based game systems generate musical form, and what kind of authentic concert experience emerges from a performer navigating game objectives while simultaneously crafting an expressive performance?

The Authenticity Angle

In Digital Gameful Composition (DGC), authenticity is tied to emergence: the musical structure is not prescribed but arises from the interaction of game mechanics and performer choices. The player-performer’s dual commitment — to the game and to the audience — constitutes a new form of performative authenticity that has no analogue in either traditional performance or conventional gaming.

The Expanded Motivational Affordances (EMA) model provides analytical tools for understanding which game elements sustain this engagement. Audiences habituated to mediatised culture encounter a situation where the liveness of decision-making is foregrounded and unambiguous: the performer is visibly navigating real-time strategic choices whose musical consequences unfold before the audience.

Works

Super Colliders II (2026)

Four saxophones and Unity 3D · GroundSwell commission

A new commission expanding the gameful screen-score approach into a three-dimensional visual environment. Commissioned by the GroundSwell Emerging Composers Competition.

Super Colliders (2018)

Three pitched instruments/voices and interactive computer system · Gamified screen-score

An audiovisual game piece that integrates the enthusiasm of gameplay with historically inherited compositional devices — specifically contrapuntal writing derived from Bach’s Invention No. 1 — into a single performance ecosystem. Three musicians control avatars by performing ascending/descending glissandi at varying dynamics. The player’s desire to win the game generates the musical structure as a byproduct.

The game system uses a second-order Markov chain that adapts difficulty based on pitch-collision probabilities, progressively overwriting the Bach source material with performer-generated sequences. Across four rounds, the relationship between prescribed material and emergent structure shifts decisively toward the latter.

2nd Prize, ISMIR 2020 Music Awards · 8 performances across 4 countries · Victoria Gallery Museum, Liverpool (Ligeti Quartet) · TENOR 2021 · JSME Tokyo 2022

Tongue-Twister Competition (2016)

Ensemble · Composed for Ensemble Intercontemporain, IRCAM Manifeste Academy 2016

A game piece structured as a tournament competition. In each round, instrumentalists compete to play given musical phrases as fast as possible; the slowest player is disqualified. After nine elimination rounds, two finalists compete head-to-head. The grand winner performs a breathtaking solo in the fanciest manner.

Honorary Mention, BGSU New Music Ensemble Call for Scores 2016

Attractor/Disturbance (2015)

Ensemble, conductor, electronics and 8 loudspeakers

A network art game piece built on two conflicting goal-oriented systems: Attractor — a feedback system that converges spectra toward a specific frequency via room acoustics and real-time processing — and Disturbance — a game system in which the conductor walks the auditorium to identify which loudspeaker plays the highest transposition of a real-time recording. Seven rounds of recording, quiz, answer, and judgement sections unfold the interaction between convergence and differentiation.

Key Concepts

  • Gameful vs. gamified — gameful describes an experience of intrinsic motivation arising from game-like qualities; gamified describes a system with game elements applied to a non-game context. DGC is gameful: the game mechanics are compositional material, not external incentives.
  • Player-performer as hybrid role — the musician simultaneously inhabits the role of competitive player (pursuing game objectives) and expressive performer (crafting a musical experience for a co-present audience). This dual commitment is the source of the work’s distinctive performative authenticity.
  • EMA model — the Expanded Motivational Affordances model extends Deterding’s gameful design framework to musical performance, identifying which game elements sustain intrinsic engagement for player-performers.
  • Emergent musical structure — form arises from the interaction of game rules and performer choices rather than from top-down compositional prescription. The contrast with the hierarchical model’s top-down control is a genuine methodological departure.
  • Procedural rhetoric — following Bogost: meaning is made through rules and processes, not through narrative or representation. The game’s rules argue something about competition, collaboration, and musical structure.
  • Metagame — strategic behaviour that arises from knowledge of the game system itself, extending the musical experience beyond the score into a social and strategic dimension.
